Healthy Travel: Key Facts at a Glance
Common travel health issues include motion sickness, thrombosis, sunburn, sunstroke/heatstroke, constipation and traveller's diarrhoea.
Motion sickness is caused by a mismatch between what your eyes see and what your inner ear senses. Looking at a fixed point on the horizon and getting fresh air can help; avoid reading or scrolling on your phone.
Thrombosis risk increases with prolonged sitting. Drink enough water, move regularly, and consider compression stockings on long journeys. Sudden shortness of breath or chest pain needs immediate medical attention.
Sunburn, sunstroke and heatstroke result from excessive UV exposure and heat. Use sunscreen, light clothing and headgear, and avoid the sun between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Heatstroke (body temperature above 40°C, rapid heartbeat, confusion) is a medical emergency.
Constipation is common while travelling due to changed routines and diet. Drink 1.5–2 litres of fluid daily, eat fibre-rich foods, and stay active.
Traveller's diarrhoea is often caused by contaminated food or water. Follow the rule "cook, fry, peel or do without," and rehydrate with water, broth or electrolyte solutions if symptoms occur.
