You've finally turned 18, so what's important now?
When you reach the age of majority, you have new freedoms and obligations. From 1 January following your 18th birthday, you are considered a young adult by health insurance companies.
The following will change:
- Statutory minimum deductible of CHF 300.00 and excess of 10%
- You can choose: Family or individual insurance
- You’re responsible for paying your invoices

Basic insurance
Basic insurance is mandatory. All persons resident in Switzerland must be insured with a Swiss health insurer from birth or from the time they move to Switzerland.
We offer three basic insurance models:
- EGK-TelCare, telemedicine 24/7
- EGK-Care, ManagedCare family doctor model
- Traditional model, free choice of doctor
These are the three age groups for mandatory healthcare insurance (OKP)
- Children up to the age of 18
- Young adults aged 19 to 25
- Adults aged 26 and over
The premium adjustment due to the change in age group will be announced with the annual policy dispatch in autumn. (as of 1 January of the following year).
The annual cost contribution in mandatory healthcare insurance (OKP) consists of the optional deductible, the retention fee and the hospital contribution.
- Statutory deductible
The deductible is your annual contribution towards your medical expenses. It is CHF 300.00 for adults aged 19 and over. If you choose a higher deductible, you can save on your premiums.
Optional deductibles: CHF 500, 1,000, 1,500, 2,000 or 2,500 - Excess
Once the annual deductible has been paid, the excess of 10%, up to a maximum of CHF 700.00, applies. For children, this is limited to CHF 350.00. - Hospital contribution
Basic insurance covers the costs of accommodation and meals during a hospital stay. The Federal Health Insurance Act stipulates that the hospital cost contribution of CHF 15.00 per day must be billed to the insured person.
Children and young adults in education don’t pay any hospital cost contribution.
- Children don’t have a statutory deductible, but only the excess of 10%, up to a maximum of CHF 350.00 per calendar year. The persons with parental authority may, however, choose a deductible.
- Adults aged 19 and over have a statutory minimum deductible of CHF 300.00 and an excess of 10%, up to CHF 700.00.
- The hospital cost contribution of CHF 15.00 per day is regulated separately. Persons in education up to the age of 25 don’t pay this contribution.
- Save on premiums: A higher deductible or a different insurance model can be selected.
- Do you work eight hours or more per week? If so, you can exclude accident cover from your basic insurance.
- Are you entitled to a premium reduction? Check with your municipality whether you’re eligible. Overview of cantons.
Family insurance
- You can remain insured under your parents’ family policy.
- To ensure that your parents may continue to receive information about your insurance, we require a declaration of power of attorney. Please complete the form and return it to us.
- If the conditions are met, you benefit from the family discount on supplementary insurance.
Own invoicing
- Would you like to take responsibility for your own health insurance?

Accident cover can be included or excluded from basic insurance at any time, depending on the number of working hours.
- Vocational training
You can exclude accident cover from your mandatory healthcare insurance as you are insured by your employer against occupational and non-occupational accidents. - School or university
Accident insurance remains included in your mandatory healthcare insurance.
If you’re also employed and work at least eight hours per week for the same employer, you can exclude accident cover from your health insurance.
- Are you doing military service, civilian service or civil protection service for more than 60 consecutive days? If so, you can suspend your basic insurance. During this time, you’ll be insured against illness and accident under the federal government’s military insurance. Procedure: Send us your call-up letter (via app, email or post) and we’ll take the necessary steps.
Supplementary insurance under the Insurance Policies Act (VVG)
Unlike basic insurance, supplementary insurance is voluntary. You need to undergo a medical examination before taking out most supplementary insurance policies. For this reason, you must never cancel existing supplementary insurance before you’ve received confirmation of acceptance for the new insurance policy.
Comprehensive supplementary insurance with many advantages such as hospital cover throughout Switzerland, complementary medicine, emergency transport, cover abroad, etc.
EGK-SUN supplementary insurance covers the costs in addition to mandatory healthcare insurance. The prerequisite is the medical necessity of treatment.

- EGK-KTI, lump-sum insurance for illness

Change health insurer
You can choose for yourself which health insurer you would like to be insured with.
Following written cancellation of the insurance, all premiums and cost contributions must be paid by the date of departure.
- Your parents are responsible for settling the bills until you turn 18.
- You're responsible from the age of 18 if you have individual insurance.
- Basic and supplementary insurance may be taken out with different providers.
- Don’t cancel an existing supplementary insurance policy until you’ve received confirmation of acceptance for the new insurance policy, as a medical examination is required to take out such a policy.
