18 at last What will change regarding your health insurance?

When you reach the age of majority, you assume responsibility for your health insurance. We support your journey to insurance independence.

What will change

  • Deductible & retention fee

Statutory minimum deductible of CHF 300 + 10% retention fee, up to CHF 700 per year
  • Personal responsibility

From the age of 18, you are responsible for paying your premiums.
  • Family or individual policy

You decide whether to stay on the family policy or switch to your own policy.
  • Choice of insurance model

You can choose between different basic insurance models and deductible levels in order to optimise your premiums and actively shape your insurance.

Note:

Parents are responsible for paying the bills up to the age of 18. The insured person is responsible for payment from the effective date provided there is an individual insurance policy.

Basic insurance: what young adults need to know

  • Basic insurance is compulsory for all persons who are resident in Switzerland from birth or from the date of moving to Switzerland. Between the ages of 19 and 25, you are considered a “young adult” with your own premium rate that is lower than that of adults aged 26 and over. The premium adjustment due to the change of age group will be announced with the annual policy dispatch in autumn and will apply from 1 January of the following year.

    Age groups

    • Children up to the age of 18
    • Young adults from 19 to 25 years of age
    • Adults aged 26 and over

19 to 25 years: This is an advantage that other health insurers do not offer.
If you are young, you should not pay more than you have to. This is why EGK offers a family discount for children up to the age of 25. The family discount on supplementary insurance applies to young adults up to the age of 25 with EGK only. Applies to everyone covered by the same bill: The family discount is not limited to traditional families. It applies to all adults who are insured under the same bill.

  • The annual co-payment is made up of three parts:

    Deductible
The minimum deductible is CHF 300. You can also choose a deductible of CHF 500, 1,000, 1,500, 2,000 or 2,500. The higher the deductible, the lower your premium. The deductible is the amount that you personally contribute to your medical costs every year.

    Retention fee
Once the annual deductible has been reached, the retention fee of 10% applies, up to a maximum of CHF 700 per year.

    Contribution to hospital costs

In the event of hospitalisation, the Federal Health Insurance Act requires patients to pay a contribution of CHF 15 per day for accommodation and meals. In the event of hospitalisation, the Federal Health Insurance Act requires patients to pay a contribution of CHF 15 per day for accommodation and meals. Young adults in education and persons affected by maternity are exempt from this contribution.

    • Vocational training: As the employer has to take out insurance against occupational and non-occupational accidents, accident cover can be excluded from basic insurance to save on premiums.
    • School or university studies: Accident insurance remains included in basic insurance. Accident cover with the health insurance company may be excluded in the event of additional employment of at least eight hours per week with the same employer.
  • Basic insurance may be paused (suspended) if you do more than 60 consecutive days of military service, civilian service or civil protection service. During this time, the federal government's military insurance provides cover for illness and accident.

Procedure: Send the call-up letter to EGK via app, email or post. The necessary steps are then taken together.

    • If you seldom go to the doctor, choosing a higher deductible (up to max. CHF 2,500) reduces the premium.
    • An alternative insurance model such as EGK-TelCare or EGK-Care reduces costs.
    • It is possible to exclude accident cover if you work at least eight hours per week.
    • It is worth checking your entitlement to a premium reduction with your municipality of residence.

Voluntary, but recommended: supplementary insurance for more protection

Why is supplementary insurance important?

Basic insurance covers basic medical care. Anyone who wants a free choice of doctor in hospital, wishes to receive treatment throughout Switzerland or makes use of complementary medicine therapies quickly exceeds the limits of basic care. Supplementary insurance closes these gaps. The additional protection is worthwhile, especially for young adults who travel a lot, do sport or focus on holistic health, and is often cheaper than expected.
