EGK insurance card

The front of the card contains the insured person’s personal details: surname, first name, gender and date of birth, as well as the name and BAG number of the health insurer. It also includes a 20-digit Insurance Card number (VeKa No. in accordance with the EU standard) and the 13-digit AHV number.

This information is also stored on the microprocessor and can be read by a healthcare provider using a chip card reader. The front of the card also shows the insurer’s contact details and the health insurer’s emergency telephone number (SOS no. ‘41 44 283 33 93’) for use both at home and abroad.

On the reverse side you will find the European Health Insurance Card for use in other European countries (blue reverse side), as well as your EGK policy number. The emergency number ‘41 44 283 33 93’ is printed on the Insurance Card and can be found under ‘Contact’ in the myEGK app. It is intended for emergencies abroad and is handled by Allianz Global Assistance. If calling from Switzerland, you can contact 144.

Are there any costs involved?
Whether the service is free of charge depends on your insurance cover:

• Free of charge for people with KVG basic insurance and EGK-SUN supplementary insurance with EGK
• Free of charge for EGK-SUN Members, even without KVG cover with EGK
• Subject to a charge for KVG members without supplementary insurance with EGK, for example in the event of repatriation. In this case, you will also be asked about any Travel insurance you may have

The EGK insurance card can be used both at home and abroad, including via the myEGK app. In the event of an emergency whilst in another European country, the insurance card entitles you to receive treatment in accordance with the social security regulations and rates of the country you are visiting.

The Insurance Card cannot be used in non-European countries. You should check your supplementary insurance cover if you are travelling abroad. In some circumstances, it may be advisable to take out additional Travel insurance.

If you have installed the ‘myEGK’ app on your smartphone, you can access the Vicard, the virtual Insurance Card.

This allows you to identify yourself at around 5,000 healthcare providers, even if you do not have your Insurance Card with you.

You can also store the Insurance Cards of all your family members in the app. However, to do so, they must also be insured with EGK-Health Insurance.

Your Insurance Card must only be used by you personally. Therefore, if you lose your card, you should contact your local branch immediately.

An expiry date is printed on both the front and back of your Insurance Card. Once this date has been reached, we will send you a new Insurance Card. You should destroy your old Insurance Card immediately.

The VVG Insurance Card is issued to people who have taken out only supplementary insurance with EGK, whilst their basic insurance under the KVG is with another insurer. The card serves as proof of EGK supplementary insurance, for example at a pharmacy when collecting medication or in hospital when choosing a ward.

Unlike the KVG Insurance Card, the reverse side is white and cannot be used as a European Health Insurance Card. Nevertheless, it is worth carrying the card with you: the front features the SOS telephone number for EGK Assistance (+41 44 283 33 93), which provides essential services in an emergency.

If you switch your basic insurance to another insurer, you must destroy your EGK Insurance Card immediately.
