Frequently asked questions

  • 01

Is a referral required for every treatment by a specialist, a therapy practice or a hospital?

Yes. Under the EGK-Care family doctor model, the family practice coordinates the entire treatment pathway. Referral for treatment by specialists, therapy practices or hospitals must always be provided by the family practice. Exceptions apply to certain specialist areas, which can be accessed directly and without prior approval.

  • 02

Which specialist areas can be accessed without referral?

Gynaecology for preventive examinations, ophthalmology for an annual check-up to prescribe optical aids and dentistry can be accessed directly without prior referral. For children up to the age of 12, this exception also applies to the paediatric practice.

  • 03

Who is responsible in an emergency if you are insured under the EGK-Care model?

In an emergency, the emergency service is responsible, regardless of the family practice you choose. The rule of contacting your family practice first does not apply in this case.

  • 04

What is the difference between EGK-Care and the EGK-TelCare telemedicine model?

With EGK-Care, a family practice personally chosen from the EGK doctors list is the first point of contact for health concerns. With EGK-TelCare, this initial assessment is instead carried out over the phone via a telemedicine consultation. Which model is more suitable depends on your personal requirements, such as whether the priority is a well-trusted local practice or flexible availability by phone.

  • 05

Is there a free choice of family practice, or is the selection limited to a specific list?

The family practice is selected from the EGK doctors list, which includes various family practices and family doctor networks in each region. A free choice outside this list is not possible under the EGK-Care model. The list can be accessed via the doctor search function on egk.arztmap.ch.

What happens if the desired family practice is not accepting new patients?

Whether a practice accepts new patients depends on their current capacity and is beyond the control of EGK-Gesundheitskasse. Please contact the practice directly to find out whether admission is currently possible. Alternatively, select another practice from the doctors list.
