Travel insurance: how to get the right protection abroad

A medical emergency abroad can quickly lead to high costs. Statutory basic insurance only covers part of the costs abroad, and return transport to Switzerland is not included.

What does basic insurance cover abroad?

  • EU/EFTA/UK

    The European insurance card on the back of your health insurance card covers medically necessary emergency treatment. Basic insurance covers these benefits in the event of illness or accident in accordance with the provisions of the country in which you are staying.

  • Outside EU/EFTA/UK

    Basic insurance pays up to twice the costs of comparable treatment in your canton of residence. In high-price countries such as the US or Canada, this can lead to cover gaps.

  • Return transport to Switzerland

    Not covered by basic insurance. EGK-SUN or supplementary travel insurance will cover these costs.
 

What qualifies as an emergency?

An emergency is deemed to have occurred if medical treatment is required and cannot be postponed until the patient returns to Switzerland. It does not include routine examinations or planned procedures.

    Do I need travel insurance if I already have EGK-SUN?

    EGK-SUN covers important emergency and transport services abroad. Additional annual travel insurance from Allianz supplements this to cover trip cancellation, interruption and delay. Those who travel regularly benefit from the combination of both insurance policies.

    Annual or single-trip travel insurance?

    Annual travel insurance pays off as soon as you take more than one trip per year. The premium for a specific trip is significantly higher. In addition, all weekend trips are automatically covered without having to rebook each time.

    What cover is provided outside Europe, e.g. US, Canada or India?

    You may find there are major gaps in your basic cover in countries with high treatment costs (US, Canada, Japan, Australia) or in countries where tourists are often treated in private hospitals (India, Latin America, Africa). EGK-SUN and travel insurance from Allianz reliably close these gaps.

    The team coordinates emergency transport, hospital admissions and repatriation to Switzerland. At the same time, you can reach the Allianz Travel emergency centre around the clock on +41 44 202 00 00.

    What does EGK-SUN supplementary insurance cover abroad?

    EGK-SUN supplementary insurance covers the following benefits: 

    • Emergency transport: CHF 100,000 per calendar year
