Frequently asked questions

  • 01

When does my child have to be covered by health insurance?

    • Under basic insurance, insurance cover begins from birth, regardless of whether you registered the baby before birth or within three months of the birth.
    • In the case of prenatal registration, supplementary insurance also begins from birth. If registration is after the birth, a health check is required. The insurance then begins from the first day of the month following the date of signature.
  • 02

Can all family members be insured under the same policy?

Yes, with EGK, you can insure all family members living in the same household under a joint family policy and manage everything centrally via the myEGK app or portal. This means you always have an overview of cover, bills and documents for the whole family in one place.

  • 03

Can I insure my child with EGK without being insured there myself?

Yes, it is possible. In Switzerland, everyone is free to choose their health insurer. Parents and children do not have to be insured with the same health insurer. However, if you insure your whole family with EGK, you benefit from a 10% family discount on EGK-SUN supplementary insurance policies as well as a family discount on basic insurance (from the third child).

  • 04

How much does health insurance for children with EGK cost?

The premiums for basic insurance depend on the canton, age and chosen insurance model. With EGK, children benefit from particularly low child premiums. Calculate your personal family premium easily with our premium calculator.

What applies to the deductible and retention fee for children?

Children do not have a statutory minimum deductible, but as a parent or guardian, you can voluntarily choose a deductible of between CHF 0 and CHF 500 to reduce the premium. The retention fee is 10% of the costs incurred and is capped at CHF 350 per calendar year per child. If more than two children of a family are insured with EGK, a maximum retention fee of CHF 1,000 per year applies.

  • 06

What are the benefits of insuring my entire family with EGK?

Families living together in the same household, all of whom are insured with EGK, receive a family discount of 10% on EGK-SUN supplementary insurance products until the end of the year in which the youngest child turns 25. In addition, a further discount on the child premium for basic insurance applies from the third child under the age of 18.

  • 07

What is a head of the family at EGK, and how does the app work for the whole family?

The head of the family is the person through whom all family members are managed under a joint family policy. With the myEGK portal or app, the head of the family can view and manage the insurance cover of all family members centrally in one place, including a digital insurance card (Vicard) for each insured person. With myEGK, the head of the family has the option of transferring the rights.

  • 08

Up to what age can children benefit from reduced premiums for basic insurance?

Children up to the age of 18 are classified in a lower age group and pay lower premiums. Young adults up to the age of 25 also benefit from a reduced rate and from the fact that there is no contribution to hospital costs if they are still in education.

  • 09

Which complementary medicine for children is covered by EGK?

With EGK-SUN supplementary insurance, your children have access to a wide range of complementary medicine, from recognised naturopaths to therapies such as kinesiology, osteopathy or shiatsu. EGK has been specialising in holistic healthcare for over 100 years.

What happens to my child’s insurance when they turn 18?

From 1 January following their 18th birthday, your child switches to adult premiums, is responsible for paying the premiums themselves and is considered a young adult by health insurance companies. The child can continue to be covered under the family policy. In order for you as a parent to continue to receive information about the insurance, we require a completed power of attorney from your child. The competent agency informs young adults in a letter and asks for the power of attorney.
