Bay leaf, the aromatic seasoning herb

Spicy laurel
Our February newsletter features the bay leaf. Did you know that the bay leaf is an appetising digestive aid used internally in medicine to treat colic?

The plant can be applied externally to treat rheumatism, providing rapid relief. Hanging up a twig of aromatic bay leaf makes the air fresh and clean. Fresh or even dried bay leaves provide effective protection against insects. Dried figs and liquorice were wrapped in bay leaves to protect them from the dreaded weevil.

Old articles on medicinal plants describe how the Laurus nobilis was once used as an effective antiseptic. A bay leaf extract in bath water relieves joint and other types of pain.

The bay leaf is also a well-known ingredient in cooking: discover our tasty «potato with bay leaf» (German) recipe now from our recipe author Foodwerk.ch.
