The premiums follow the costs

In a recently published video, the FOPH explains in a simple and clear way how our health insurance works and what factors encourage it to become increasingly expensive. There are sensible ways in which an insured per-son can influence their premium.

Our mandatory health insurance (OKP) is one of the most expensive in the world, but also one of the best. In 2021, 36.3 billion francs were spent on it. The video of the FOPH "Die Kosten in der obligatorischen Krankenpflegeversicherung" shows how these are composed, how they arise and who bears them.

Actively shape the premium

To keep health insurance premiums from overburdening your budget, there are ways to help shape them. For example:

  • Instead of the basic model, another OKP insurance model can be selected. EGK offers a family doctor model –  EGK-Care – and a telemedical model – EGK-TelCare. For both, the first point of contact is defined as the personal family doctor or contacting Medgate by telephone. The premium savings are 10% for EGK-Care and 15% for EGK-TelCare.

  • From the age of 19 ("young adult" according to basic insurance), an optional deductible can be used to increase one's own share of the costs with a manageable risk. In return, the premiums decrease. The maximum optional deductible is CHF 2500, which can be combined with another insurance model to save up to 50%.

  • Accident coverage can be excluded if you work at least 8 hours a week for the same employer and are thus insured against leisure time accidents. This reduces the premium by up to 5%.

  • Finally, a discount of 1% can be deducted if you pay your premium bill annually instead of monthly (semi-annually: 0.5% discount).
